Google reviews: how to ask for them and how to reply

People looking for a restaurant, a hairdresser or a plumber check the stars before they even open the website. The more recent reviews you have, the more people pick you over the competitor down the street. Here is how to ask for reviews the right way, and how to reply when one goes badly.

In short

  1. Ask everyone, right after

The best moment is just after the service, while the customer is happy. A week later they have forgotten.

  2. Use the direct link

Google gives you a link that opens the review box straight away. One tap instead of five steps.

  3. Put it where customers see it

A QR code at the till, the link in WhatsApp messages, in your email signature and on your website.

  4. Reply to every review, good ones too

People reading reviews also read your replies. They show there is a real person behind the business.

  5. Negative ones: stay calm, offer a fix

Thank them, acknowledge the problem, offer to talk privately. Readers judge the reply more than the complaint.

  6. Never give discounts in exchange

Google bans offering discounts or freebies for a review, and asking only happy customers. You risk losing them all.
