Slow website: how to tell and what slows it down
People looking for you on their phone are usually in a hurry: in the car, on a lunch break, in front of a shop window. If your site stays blank, they go back and tap the next result. Here is how to tell whether your site is slow and what is holding it back, even if you are not technical.
In short
Test it on your phone
Turn off wifi, open the site on mobile data and count. If the screen is still blank after three seconds, it is slow.
Check it with Google’s free tool
Paste the address into pagespeed.web.dev and within a minute you see the mobile score and what drags it down.
Photos that are too heavy
The most common cause: photos uploaded straight from the phone, several MB each.
Too many add-ons
Chat widgets, popups, sliders, counters, plugins installed and never removed: each one adds weight.
Slow hosting
The server your site lives on. The cheapest ones sometimes take seconds to respond before showing anything.
Know what to ask
The full guide has plain-language questions to ask whoever manages your site.
